my biggest issue with something like this is, you have magic, why don't you at least listen in or watch what the people you just rejected are doing? even if they don't do anything it doesn't hurt to be more cautious, especially considering he already acknowledged that she was scheming something. did he really think it would just end like that?

Kind of an attention and time thing.
Just because you can put a camera everywhere on any person you want at anytime you want, will you do it on every person you find sus? He might be cynical, but he isn't paranoid.
It's also notable the MC has no interest about the broader world at large, likely after all the bullshit he has dealt with. In that sense, he is quite relatable because keeping up with the joneses is a very stupid thing and staying outta politics/away from evil stupid people is always better IMO if one can afford to.

If you have the power, would you want to get literal brain rot keeping up with the idiots or nuke said idiots when they finally FAFO?

These gossip and info work are the kind of work normal or people in power delegate to diplomats, private investigators. or spies to handle. I get the feeling MC's friend may have to get better connected soon and/or try to lower some flags as he is now the guy with the key to MC's house.

The readers know that he's apparently not gay, but the princess doesn't have that information, so she shouldn't be jumping to that conclusion just yet.

Buddy, have you seen this country called America led by a disgusting orange "god-emperor"? It is hard to be strange when reality is making fantasy look tame.
If (wannabe) kings in reality think they're untouchable and can declare anything they want against facts and logic, a fictional world of fantasy of magic with royalty declaring anything they want against all sane logic should be expected.

I would say your right but your forgetting this is still mideveal times where a royal could kill thousands and many would still be afraid to revolt
Mideveal revolutions in fantasy worlds are even worst as most of the time the ones in power literally have the most power(i.e strongest magic/skills so they are even less likely to revolt)

I always hate how easily shonen manga fall back on making villains who are praised and highlighted for being smart and cunning, but who invariably do the dumbest stuff possible just because they have to utterly fail in the face of the glorious, untouchable hero/protagonist.

Smart characters need to be written smart to work. I guess the biggest problem is that it's hard for any writer to make someone smarter than the writer can manage to be on their own.

Yes, intelligent characters ARE hard to do. Because most "literate" people are literally only capable of reading at <= 8th grade level.
But you are likely confusing "manipulative" with "intelligent". Manipulative people are not always intelligent; they simply know how to get other people to act. A bully who gets good grades isn't smart, but said bully is/was capable of forcing smarter people to do his work.

An author would have to be intelligent and do their due diligent research to create smart MCs. Making an MC that is too smart makes them unrelatable to the average reader. Also, smart people seem to have ways of making "challenges" go away because the plot says they are smart enough to do so.

yk I've always wondered that why not just let the citizens handle it instead? like let them know the royalty is driving their kingdom into their doom by provoking a hero/a betrayed hero, a literal powerhouse so to speak.

and also it'll be so funny that there is war with the demons just cause they enslaved them or something.

so yeah just let themselves fight each other by exposing them especially since they have a high ranking adventurer on their side too which probably has a good reputation to the people unlike the royalty.
