I've always hated that trope of some outside party (other than parents when the couple are minors) acting as if they have any sort of authority over somebody else's relationship and setting some sort of obstacle or challenge for them to get over.

For example, the love rival; "If I win at ____ event, I get to date her!"

Like, why would you ever assume you have any say in that? What if the girl just straight up doesn't like you?
