I don’t even think a bribe would be necessary. They just fully hate the MC for being a thief. That is the whole premise of the story. His job is important. His job is necessary. without him Adventures would get killed. But everyone still looks down on him because he is a thief.

That is the issue, he accepted the quest knowing it was shaddy, MC isn't a saint and honestly seens like he was on a self destruct path before he picked Tiana.

It actually "is" Scout. But many Scouts use their Skills for ... well Thievery so they dragged the whole Jobs rep into the mud and people started calling it "Thief" instead.

They don't know that... because they are stupid. It's obvious they barely bothered with basic research as they had no Idea where he got the gold for her from. It was a proper Guild Quest in a Party so easy to find out, she was bought above board and was healed in a big temple by one of his party members even. All things they can find out with Leg work. But all they see is a adorable young slave who is probably worth a pretty penny and assume he did something shady to get her because they are prejudiced douchebags.
Smart they are not.

:EDIT: I just realized this is even dumber. The original accusation had nothing to do with a slave as the gold supposedly was spend "on a building". They are literary just grasping at straws because they where humiliated.

To those that want to read ahead in the web novel, it's roughly around chapter 33. This whole mess with the knights end at around chapter 35
