To be fair, the average medieval peasant wouldn't think about numbers beyond normal additions and subtractions. They're too busy trying to put literal food on the table than they are going to school. It's way more important to maintain survival than to bother learning how to read and do math. If you're gonna die from starvation, disease, or even bloody murder to keep the amount of mouths to feed low, what's the point of considering getting education?

Like, in prehistoric times, people only started doing things like arts and crafts after they started farming and domesticating animals. Easier food than foraging and hunting after all.

Yeah, I'm actually more OK with Yamagishi being introduced in ch 4.4 now he's been brought up here, but before that, I didn't understand why they'd introduce a new POV character.
