Yeah... this whole thing with the relic corrupting her mind wasn't in the anime at all.
In the anime I swear she was reciting the "prayer" as a personal sacrifice to gain access to the power... but here it seems cause and effect is reversed, and accessing the power curses her to act like a religious lunatic... and apparently tampers with her conscious awareness too...

To be frank, the whole point is to break the trainees down.
As already stated, retraining the already trained is not easy, they have a foundation and the pride that comes with it.
So, like how recruits are subjected to constant yelling in some places, these people have to be humiliated to the point that it borders, or is torture.

And females have harder time to become muscular compared to males.
The female body collect fat, whil the male body burn through fat quicker. That's why some military training program give female trainees smaller proportion of food and ration compared to male trainees, in order to make sure their body build up muscles quicker than just burning their fat reserves.
