I do not understand this manga at all.
This is currently rated third on mangadex, so I might be overhyped and delusional enough to see this to be as good as the second coming of christ. But one thing is for sure, is that I fail to understand what makes this manga so good.
Slice of life is something that is sort of an acquired taste. Usually with any SOL manga: there aren't any strong goals, there is little to no tension, and there isn't any "antagonists/protagonists," rather the entire cast is one. The premise of any SOL manga can simply be summed up as a "wildcard" (eg. Yotsuba, Machida, Komi, Hina, Senko, etc.) is thrown into what society seems as normal, with each individual in the cast having their own small quirks and personalities. The interactions between such characters is what I think is what makes any SOL entertaining.
The wildcard for this manga, Yugami is the epitome of wildcard. However, his unpredictable behaviour completely detracts from his amazing character depth. He is known to suffer on the inside behind his mask of irrationality in some chapters, which makes you question his backstory. But it is never explained why he acts in such way, as he would be somewhat bearable if there was some solid reasoning behind it. Also, every single interaction with him can be broken down to: (Please do this social norm) -> (No I am going to go my own way) -> (He wins and gets left alone). There isn't anything inherently wrong with this and sometimes is seen as a good thing (e.g. standing up for what he thinks is right), but most of the time is just this asinine behaviour that has no point other than to piss off the person talking to him. What makes it worse is that it is played for laughs but the only thing it's playing for me is being irritating.
If anyone wants to explain how to like this character please do, I feel like I'm missing something real cool.
TLDR: Manga which relies on the interactions between characters dragged down by irate cheese-grater of a main character.
