I'm just wondering what the ratio of the forum's opinions is. :thonk: I'm also wondering what kind of Yuri people like, and why. For example, I've heard Robinisback likes toxic Yuri, but I'm curious about his reasoning.:meguupog: I personally like the plot structure of Yuri the most, characters after that, and strange premises as well. Ideally the Yuri I read has a good plot, interesting characters, and a bizarre premise.:glee: Please share your opinions with me. :hearts:

I feel like saying you like specific kinds of yuri is saying you like less yuri than someone who said they dont like specific kinds of yuri... Does that make sense?

Yes, but you can pick two. I voted for unconditionally and I like specific kinds.
Edit: I've changed my mind, sensei has convinced me that unconditional love for a genre is unreasonable. Won't stop me from spreading the word of unconditional platonic love though. :02:

I've seen a lotta people say they like toxic yuri.
I'm not exactly the most avid yuri fan so I'm really curious about the reasoning.
I'm a self proclaimed certified fujoshi, but I hate toxic yaoi, so does toxicity hit different when it comes to yuri?

@Robinisback Please explain your predilection for toxic Yuri.
It's rather simple, really. I've already said that mainstream Yuri has become oversaturated to the point where its tropes feel repetitive and formulaic, relying on the same predictable setups and outcomes and in contrast, toxic Yuri thrives on its dysfunction and unpredictability. It doesn’t need to follow a conventional structure, making the stories far more engaging. The emotional intensity is high, it deals with darker, raw emotions like jealousy, obsession, and possessiveness. Toxic Yuri also explores themes like dependence, manipulation, and power imbalances, something which are often overlooked in typical romance narratives.

To me what makes toxic Yuri stand out is its refusal to idealize love. Most romance manga treat love as something pure, perfect, and untouchable, but toxic Yuri leans into the imperfections of real relationships. It acknowledges that love can be messy, destructive, and full of flaws, and that’s what makes it feel so grounded and human( This point really depends on the manga, I've some really good one but there are many bad ones too.) I've noticed that this subgenre often pushes uncomfortable truths about relationships. It's pretty entertaining and insightful, really.
and another compelling aspect is how it often focuses on morally gray characters. These are people who aren’t entirely good or bad, and their relationships reflect that ambiguity. It’s not just about the romance, it’s about the individuals, their flaws, and how their dynamic shapes them. And let’s not ignore the intense drama, lol. There’s a trainwreck appeal to toxic Yuri, it’s uncomfortable yet fascinating to watch. The intense emotions and morally complex storytelling create morbid fascination within you, I am always curious to see how far the author will take it, how they’ll handle these deeply flawed dynamics. It’s bold and raw and unapologetically different from the sanitized romance shit that dominate the genre.

Tldr for those who don't know how to fucking read,: I wanna be in a Toxic Yuri relationship so bad so I reflect it on my taste.

You have my utmost respect.:salute: Maybe I'll read some of that, but it's probably too heavy for me. :02:

Huh. I was not aware. 'Formulaic' actually explains really good as of why I kinda don't enjoy a number of yuri given to me if it's under publishers (I suppose this is what constitutes as mainstream yuri?)
Like, bet it's gonna be two high school girls having a relatively low stake school life then either it's a comfy sloooow burn or wholesome low-stake dating life, the personality clash felt 'safe' enough to make them stay together.
(I don't know better, the last time I was invested was like, over 5 years ago)

I don't love yuri unconditionally because, besides the obvious point of "there are bad authors everywhere", I can't stand XX century yuri style or the low standards of the genre and Japanese industry. The first point would be the espapism drive and the acritical take on mostly anything nowadays authors do when choosing a setting: segregationist girl-only Christian schools in Japan where girls simply want not to become adults. To summarise, during High Middle Ages and Reinassance homosexuality existed in convents both for monks and nuns but with the Counter-Reformation in all churches persecution was carried out until today from censuring it to punishing it with death even without the interference of the Inquisition, so the idea of a place to have an affective relationship (even more of that kind) can't be more far-fetched. If the idea of being a "tolerant place" is outright wrong to start with, the warped meaning of sisterhood only makes it worse as they're neither religious nor trying to fulfill duties or goals but a made-up literary resource that too many authors took seriously and acritically again. Instead of taking a feminist approach about life, they mix in the worldwide homophobic take of "non-straight love is something you graduate from", the slogan "I want to be a teenager forever" as mere escapism and lack of goals in life. The most popular 2000s series that inherits all that is Strawberry Panic.

Another yuri group I despise is the "dumb joke yuri", which is more or less the most hated trope by yuri lovers and at the same time the most popular, it appeared by the end of 2000s under names of Yuru Yuri and Sakura Trick. Essentially teenager only, it is made to attract the general audience with bland/dumb humour without portraying any serious relationship. The other group I can't stand either is a blend of shoujo manga, some parts of the canonical yuri (first paragraph) and a laid-back teen life. The most iconic author in this sense is Morinaga Milk but, despite its initial popularity, it has faded in time and had to change to survive. Of course, there are many that don't belong to neither group since they're plainly bad and are not innovative, some with more popularity and others that simply do it because they had to in order to get a serialisation, basically young male mangaka with no issues with copying everything and leaving mostly everything on the hands of their editor. Also, many of these series are yuri in name only.

After explaining all that, I always look for original, innovative, comical, heart-taking, surprising, adorable, wholesome, precious, unique, unconventional and evolving yuri titles so I have recommendations for all tastes, since nowadays there's yuri to choose from it's important giving attention only to those who deserve it. The yuri I recognise as the true genre is the one that comes from mid 2000s that broke with the conventional one, either as mature, realistic and somehow representative of the collective and the other current that used the parody to develop the genre. Of course, here is where the amount of female authors are majority and male authors do it with respect. A few names and titles that made me love it: Kurogane Ken, Hiroki Takashima, doujinshi group Fuguriya most iconic title and Candy Boy. The rest you already know about it.

I can't believe that the forums have four confirmed soulless people already. I bet they aren't even sad about Dave's untimely retirement/disappearance. :pout:
I can't either. That number seems very low.
Me neither, let's make it 5.

My lawyer has told me to add a disclaimer that I feel nothing for yuri in actuality. Said something about "those damn yuri fanatics will kill us both if we ended up saying that on here MangaDex."

@BakedBanana I don't believe it... Banana... I can't believe you chose the boring option! I knew you were soulless, but I never once thought you would choose to be boring!:notlikethis:
