So the first one to squeal sets the narrative, and the prosecution builds their case off of that starting point. And as long as multiple suspects agree to set up a scapegoat, the judge will hardly even consider that they could be lying about the patsy since it fits the established narrative. I know the justice system can be screwed up by biases and assumptions, but having it laid out so clearly like this is still jarring.

It is also kind of lazy, like you can tell they could just do a lil bit more work to be fair, but this just gets them a conviction faster, so they roll with it regardless of whether the targets are guilty or not
