The way I remember it, Zector was the only one who burned the money for himself.
The one who has a restaurant was nice with his wife but they didn't love each other any more, but they were like best friends working together.
The one who teached MC how to read was an intelectual who didn't pay much attention to his wife (who is supposed to be a sage IIRC, so a good match in theory).
And the last one was a brute who was constantly yelling at his wife (who is the berserker of the group, so it doesn't make much sense for her to let him).

Anyway, that's the part of the story that tries to make the wifes look like victims to justify how awfull they are going to be to their children after that.
