It's not "I", but " he". "Even though he's usually reluctant to help". It's talking about the son helping her prepare the food. The kid seems to usually not like to help out at home.

Is a name change common for widows? I also appreciate the childish insult of "baldy" with an image showing his full head of hair next to it, even if that wasn't an appropriate translation.

From what I understand, "baldy" can be used as an "old man" slur whether they are balding or not.

Apparently in the UK calling a man bald in the workplace is sexual harassment equivalent to comments about a woman's breast size...

Yeah, it's not "baldy", but "(I hope you) go bald!!" Wishing for someone to go bald is a common thing to say in manga as a more polite way to cuss out someone.
