I won't say you're completely wrong, but I do want to point out that the memory magic has already been shown, as well as it's less than savory effects on whoever it's used on. That's how Shiva got the location of Miho from the goblin after she was kidnapped. Additionally, I can see the concerns of using that constantly considering that it appears to be as bad as if not worse than torture. another bit of devil's advocacy before I end off: They specifically bring up "rights to prey," so we can at least assume that there is some sort of legal basis for demons to assert rights over humans they capture, and they seem to be avoiding "instant death sentence" sort of stuff. It's still kind of weird, but from the demon's point of view, at least from a legal sense, what he did to Miho may not be technically illegal under normal circumstances. It sounds a lot like he's saying "I'll tell you where they are, so give me my property back".

I will say, if the author continues to play Shiva as that morally ambiguous character, whose endeavour to follow the laws of his realm, even if it forces him to go beyond what he is personally comfortable with, is just so strong that he would even sacrifice his loved ones to uphold it, that could make for some very interesting conflict down the line.

Sadly, I feel like that is probably not where this is going. But I can hope.
