Eh... he's not really trying here at all. He's just rushing around reacting to things without putting any thought into his words or actions, and very clearly not making even the slightest effort to think about how other people might feel.

His dialogue on those last two pages is so appallingly insensitive to Mikana I got whiplash. Doesn't really matter what he meant to say when that was what came out of his mouth.

Came to the comments just to do a sanity check on whether or not my gut reaction of sheer disgust reading his dialogue was excessive - turns out no, I was right on the first read. If that's what his 'trying' looks like, he should probably stay on the ground.
