Yeah, the dialogue the MC had at the start was nonsensical. He's a college student, he's not a soldier or from a country in turmoil.
And making him a lame MC type is just a waste in this kind of setting with no large conflict going on. Not being far more suspicious of his circumstances like the other two girls are, or even what's happening with the guy who is chosen as "hero". As the other commenter said, he's just being dragged around with little to say about it.
If there isn't some espionage stuff going on, then this is really poorly written.
