I assume he just wants to die, but is programmed to be unable to simply off himself as the Demonhearts are difficult to make and he can't save the world while dead. So he's forcing someone to kill him while hamming it up so they won't feel bad, after whipping them all into shape as best as he can so that the world would (hopefully) be fine without him.

@Donyatsuu

Doubt it as this is only 12.1 and the raw is up to 21.3 and that only came out on the 30th. So we still have a while before it is over.

[In such a short time, you brought them hope and despair over and over again. Your presence alone was hope for them, but at the same time, your disappearance has become despair. The power you possess symbolized their hope to survive so they become nervous when you leave.]

The God of Hope doesn’t stop explaining.

The reason is longer than I thought.

[They can only live on my mercy in a world polluted by your poisonous fog. They will never return to their hometown and will be trapped in the Holy Land forever. Even in such a dire situation, they will not lose hope for the future. It will eventually pass and their safety in the Holy Land is guaranteed. That’s what I like. You brought them new despair when they were ready to start anew. Because of that, they will never lose hope.]
*From The Tutorial is Too Hard.

This is basically what Leo-san is talking about this whole time. His existence purpose is to save humanity not to keep humanity safe, there is a minuscule difference that leads to this. If Leo-san can't save humanity because there is nothing threatening humanity then he can't fulfill his purpose.
Leo-san needs humanity to be constantly in danger so he can save humanity over and over.

If you want an omelet you have to break some eggs; You can't save the world without breaking some capitalism.

This is one of my favorite arc in this manga. I shed some manly sweat from my eyes when i read later chapters.

It seems like he has knowledge on where/how to find information on how to make a philosopher's stone too, though doing that seems to take more time and is less of a sure deal. Even if the others find the information it might be too technical for them to understand without the frame of reference needed to apply the knowledge (something he has from being from that era). I guess he choose this current option because they wanted the stone as soon as possible and he already felt like there was no purpose to his existence after being abandoned by the humans.

Wtf that credit page is what I thought when Leo decide to destroy the world so mankind will need him to save it, I was like "I have heard this before but I can't remember from where" then came this credit page, I was like "oh that's it, it's from Thanos" hahaha well done, I appreciate the translation and that credit page is what I'm waiting and crave for. Thank you very much for the translation

Giving me some serious Saikano vibes at this point. Which is fine, Saikano was great and this is a bit of an inversion of the idea.

It's not that the demons and beast people are weak. The hero has over 3000 years of fighting experience, and the ability to copy any ability used on him. That's pretty godly if you ask me.
