The way I see it, is that scholars of fantasy worlds study dungeon behavior, and adventurers know it on their own skin.But that's the thing, the classifications are what adventurers think. Unless the narrator is omniscient, which doesn't ring true since he's the one narrating in that frame.
And so they know that dungeon classifies those mage turtles as "small fry" because it deploys them in patterns similar to those of slimes and goblins.
