I'm 99% sure the hotel is abandoned, not just "seedy", because they waltz in without paying at all. Naoi has no money (if she indeed gave her father everything she had on her), and she's the one leading Kurumi to that bed. And the place doesn't just look run down but it's as if all the lights are off too.

Besides, a dirty and abandoned hotel is too fitting for this series. If the hotel was at least mostly clean and safe, these two might get caught up in the mood and just do it. Which would let them forget their problems at least for a few hours and feel a little good for once. But the series has not given these girls a break so far, so I'm not optimistic they will get a break this time either.

Yeah this chapter was so disappointing… The fact they pretty much just let him do whatever he wants and even give him the fucking money and dont do shit against him, is making this an easy 1/10 chapter
And what exactly should they have done? Are two highschool girls gonna beat up an adult man? Going by the scars he might have seriously killed them. And japan doesn't even consider domestic abuse a crime in most cases + police are scared of the right to privacy

Japan had ca. 400 cases of domestic abuse last year

Germany had 140000

Somehow, I don't believe the Germans are beating their kids that much more. Clearly shows how the problem is being ignored

Good points, but it's possible that the manga simply skipped showing Naoi paying as a way to keep up the dramatic tension of Naoi dragging Kurumi to the hotel room. As for Naoi not having money, it all depends on if she lied to her father and held so much money back from him.

One theory I've read on Japanese forums is that Kurumi and Naoi will witness Isanuma and their teacher entering the hotel as they're leaving it. And then record it with Naoi's phone. Which would probably be about the only way the teacher plot could be resolved by the end of the volume as next chapter will likely be mostly Naoi's backstory.

So lets just ignore the fact that there is something called the police? Hell she even threatened to call the police, but for some stupid reason didnt do it and instead they gave him money🤦🏼‍♂️

I can't remember, does she actually have a cell phone again yet? Hard to call the police without one. Even if she does, the dad could just take the phone, given he's willing to use violence. Very risky to see if you can call fast enough, give them your location, and wait for the police to come when there's much bigger, stronger, and more violent person right next to you.

I could write more, but she didn't know it was Naoi's dad, but now that she does there's lots of reasons to be hesitant to get the police involved as well. Police don't always make things better because their ability to help is limited until after the crime is committed, so if dad hasn't done immediately go-to-jail level stuff yet then it would be impossible to stop him from escalating. The police could do something after the escalation, but if you're dead etc then that doesn't help you. Definitely something to talk with Naoi about before considering risking it.

I'm not familiar with Japan, but taking her money and some level of physical violence (less than causing scarring or sending someone to the hospital, but more than most would consider ethical) would be legal in the US. Naoi actually does have scarring or extensive bruising, but there wouldn't be direct evidence of him doing it and the punch seems to have not caused serious damage to Kurumi. I'm not sure if it would be labeled criminal, had it hit Naoi instead of Kurumi. Kurumi being hit looks bad, but she threw herself in front of Naoi suddenly, making it clearly accidental to hit Kurumi.

It seems like Naoi's goal is to save up money so she can immediately move out when she's old enough, with her interim strategy being to bear it until she can get out, so for her the increased scrutiny from police involvement would likely be seen as unhelpful.

I kind of went on a tangent because I like thinking about this story, so you can consider just the first paragraph as my response to you if you want.

she doesn't. she says so explicitly this chapter.
Given how lax her grandmother seemed and how her mom has essentially checked out of Kurumi's life, she might only get a phone at the end of summer. Only way she'd get one sooner would be to get a part-time job herself.

Besides her mother giving up after being ignored, the missing phone seems to be primarily to keep Kurumi and Kokoro apart. It's giving Kurumi time to solidify her relationship with Naoi, while at the same time it's causing Kokoro to spend time with Akane. Not sure if Kurumi and Kokoro'll eventually try to fix their friendship or just decide their friendship was in the past and move on, becoming acquaintances.

I think improving the relationship between Kokoro and Kurumi is probably part of losing the phone. Kokoro can calm down and start to move on from the romantic feelings without putting the responsibility on Kurumi, Kurumi doesn't have to be everything to her because she will have other friends (Akane and maybe Akane's friends / her former friends), and, when Kokoro tearfully apologizes and says she thought Kurumi was mad because of not responding, Kurumi can be like, "Oh, sorry, I just lost my phone. You were probably surprised in the classroom, but I'm still fine being friends if you are" for the ultimate anticlimax from Kokoro's perspective.

All of this would be a lot harder if Kokoro did not get time away from Kurumi, though I would expect some drama and misunderstandings in between any kind of reconciliation. Kokoro should know her well enough that she can tell the likely coming rumors are false once they escalate beyond a certain point, even if she's confused about Kurumi's true personality.

Most likely. From Kurumi's side of things, she could be angry at Kokoro over things she kept quiet about before. There's also the lingering issue of what Kokoro did with Naoi's letter and telling Naoi to stay away from Kurumi without Kurumi's knowledge. This issue wasn't dropped, since Naoi's letter was mentioned again in chapter 10.

From Kokoro's side, she just doesn't like Naoi. And if she sees Kurumi's face injured again she'll think Naoi did it, even though it was Naoi's dad. The tricky part here is to preserve Naoi's privacy, Kurumi would have to lie or keep quiet over what really happened to her face, which could give Kokoro the wrong idea. The end result could end up being Kokoro making another misguided attempt at saving Kurumi.

srsly i need them to do it but we know it wont happen this early
Would be quite the twist if it did happen lol, especially because Kurumi has greater potential to be the unpredictable and "crazier" one, like we have seen so far. My favorite part is always the drama it causes with Kokoro, though. Speaking of, Kurumi still needs to "officially" reject her.

I didn't think of this, but the story's law of drama dictates this definitely has to happen. Naoi may even say it's her fault / because of her out of guilt for letting her relationship with her father impact someone outside of the home, especially someone she cares about.

My guess is not a lot is going to happen other than a number of saucy panels, which we have not had as many of in a while even though they were in every chapter in volume 1.

Kurumi is also a considerate and principled person in a lot of ways, which is part of why she finds it so frustrating when others are double faced about their intentions to take advantage of other people. She will probably realize Naoi dragging her into a likely abandoned hotel in a sketchy neighborhood at night after upsetting Naoi by getting hit by Naoi's dad is not a good time, even if it she doesn't stop it immediately.

It will however be a good opportunity for Kurumi to clarify what she actually wants out of the relationship, which isn't something she consciously knows yet herself or has expressed to Naoi. She spent a lot of time telling Naoi there was nothing between them, then wanting Naoi to stay with her while avoiding other people. It's very reasonable for Naoi to be confused at this point and ask for clarification about her intentions, so I think that's where we're going with this.

I think she would have been in a lot more trouble if someone saw her possibly doing that sort of work
This made me realize that there's already an ongoing rumor of someone doing prostitution for which kurumi was accused without any proof, ie without any features of the rumored girl known. I do agree that it won't actually be sex work, though.

Loving all the very detailed analysis in this thread. For my part my thoughts are much more shallow: looking forward to these girls working together to ruin and/or kill that man. They couldn't challenge him in that alley but with planning and cooperation they could do anything. Drop a brick on his head from a roof, frame him for serious crimes, poison him, etc
