@Tristan That's only if the court can prove it was a murder; otherwise, it's reckless endangerment (if not considered an accident altogether), so it's at most a first degree misdemeanor, which means the most he could get Stateside in many jurisdictions is 5 years, and it's more commonly a second degree misdemeanor, which often tops out with a 2 year jail sentence; however, given it's very likely his first offense and it's not that different than people walking and texting (which they shouldn't be doing either, but that's another story), a decent defense attorney could probably get him a plea deal that reduces it either a few months, or no time at all and just community service, probation and/or a fine.
