There's a lot of gut reactions to the NEET villain and his group of maladjusted losers, but I think that's the point. Same as the Manager who believed he was King Shit of Fuck Mountain. Some people, when put into extreme situations, become better people and live up to their potential, like Akira, and some are such irredeemable scum that when push comes to shove, they'll bury a knife in your back. Akira wants to live up to his potential, and Higurashi wants to wallow in his own bullshit. You're not supposed to like him. You're not supposed to think he's deep or nuanced. They even say as much in this chapter when he explains that he's angry that Akira smiled a lot while he was in college and everyone just says, "That's it? That's dumb."
