He's been coughing for a while now. No way is a scumbag in a zombie apocalypse going to succumb to something boring like tuberculosis or pertussis. Turning into a mutant would be interesting, would help progress the plot by giving more clues about how mutants come to be, and would allow for a karmic end where our heroes get to kill the guy without facing any repercussions.
