Takamura gets to go in the ring and be a wild savage, running on “instinct” and that is praised. To a lesser extent Bryan Hawk and Woli had their wild instincts praised (by the author).

But now the author is going to lecture us and Ippo (through the Coach) because Ippo threw a hard punch in the ring? Even if that was “violence”, how is that different between the unrestrained fighting of Takamura, Hawk, Woli... or even someone like Sendo?

@Ceildric you’re tripping the author isn’t lecturing us about anything he’s just showing us how much Ippo loves boxing and how he’s upset with himself for doing such a violent thing in the ring. Makes you appreciate Ippo as a character and a fighter even more when you think about it.

That’s not at all what the author’s doing. The author isn’t lecturing anybody. Fighting that way isn’t what Ippo does. It’s not his character and it never has been.

Ippo is a die-hard, PROFESSIONAL boxing lover. Ippo’s not a violent guy in the slightest. He’s never done something purely to hurt someone. That’s what he did in this last fight and now he feels like shit because he acted so out of character.
