That's exactly what is happening though, Lyle is genuinely scared for his life due to his so-called "harem" even though he wants none of it in the first place and eventually getting cornered into doing it due to political/faction disputes lmao. I think getting abused and beaten up all the time is hardly self-insert unless the author is a masochist.

Multiple factors. Declining birth rates, general apathy twords forming relationships, and the prevalence of shut ins and hikikomori. While I can't say I have recently paid much attention, but it was more common the not for a mangaka of any gender to be single and thoroughly disinterested or incapable of interacting with the 3D world. True there are exceptions, but mangaka, WN/LN author cultures tends to be a lonely one.
