I know using 3 school years is just the established standard to keep familiarity with their readership, but authors could make a strategic use of a four year system in a series like this. For one, it would give the world another layer of "not Japan," but more importantly when you decide to do a tournament arc you don't end up with the situation where one person gets a bye that lets them skip past semi-finals.

No one saw the preliminaries so Kyle had to show he's not just a flash in the pan. Why they haven't bounced him to like S Class by this point is the real mystery.
