Sure is an awful lot of backstory for these two characters relationship all the sudden. Sure do hope nothing bad happens to just one of them for some reason

Since their edible/inedible/poison mushroom knowledge comes from human books I guess they just found some book saying "edible mushrooms are good" and "poison are bad" and follow it like a religion. Brain guy probably is controlling the information for personal gain, possibly hiding books talking about the importance and uses of poison/inedible ones to manipulate public opinion.
