He doesn't have anything else to do, but don't even have the time to search for that something.

The problem is that MC perceived that way or his mother didn't stay around long enough to teach him more.

Seeing how he had nothing else going on in his life and seemingly no desire to look for anything, it was all the same for him to do it anyway. He probably doesn't actually hate his work and is good at it, considering he still could catch the last train. He can make good yen from the overtime. If the company doesn't pay for overtime, he can just record the hours and take that much longer a summer vacation.
