They were instantly charmed by him, just like zombies. they even look like ones.
That was quite emotional scene.

We seen similar situation back when fighting orcs, it was skipped/censured in manga too. Human women that was used by orcs and the rest clinging to him wishing and begging to be killed, all the while he was working on Pauvina's reincarnation. At the moment when he suggest to them to became ghouls and his followers "light returned to the female adventurers’ lifeless eyes", and got "fierce" appetite so theirs bodies could endure transformation. We only let to see start of their's transformation and end result.
And yes his charm working on those that are dead, are close to death or truly desires death. Or associated with it. Although it was after his charm got strengthen, there is a moment of a poisoned knight got charmed while being in near death state.

PS: Just in case you've thought to recommend that I read the novel: I'm manga-only because I've been spoiled for high quality writing in the non-light novels I've read (authors like Will Wight and John Bierce, of the Cradle series and the Mage Errant series respectively). I have a really difficult time adapting to international writing styles.

PS: Just in case you've thought to recommend that I read the novel: I'm manga-only because I've been spoiled for high quality writing in the non-light novels I've read (authors like Will Wight and John Bierce, of the Cradle series and the Mage Errant series respectively). I have a really difficult time adapting to international writing styles.

Not sure about styles but sometimes regions history and culture can be difficult to deal with. Like Waring States Period, if you don't know all history you don't understand half of writers intentions and meanings.
And when reading WN you must be prepared for lot of shit. It full blown wild west there, with all worst things imaginable. When they evolved into LN it get better due to editors but with some others detriments. Like losing initial plot in favor of continuing sales. Example would be "but world at peace" works. WN initially/earliers chapters structured day by day almost without gaps making it similar to diary, that in itself serves interesting part in story, manga almost cut it. But LN broken this order creating plot holes. Sample MC goes to date - wyvern's stampede interrupting - date partner cast magic - VIP (that startled the pack) noticed magic - goes to greet friend and apologies - arriving late and meet MC instead - fall in love with MC. In WN it all happening in single day but in LN they meet few days after even if they said she noticed magic gone greet them. On bright side important characters that was crated later was introduced and incorporated much earlier in LN.
Rant aside enjoy thing that you like at your own pace. If you gonna joint dark side WN club be advised that by that time they can be deleted due to copyright, translator disagreements or sites dying.
