It makes a little sense tho when you consider the attitude Hikari gave him up till now. Don't think Yuu ever thought he had a shot (wasn't good enough) and now he actually fumbled it. Yami is a different case.

The main driving factor is dumb-dumb dick thinking. Him boning Yami wasn't his idea, that was all her being angry at the world and especially her sleazebag stepdad, and then finding someone she felt something for.
She started to "notice" the change (aka stopped simping) Yuu went through during the past year which was when he's been going out with Yami. Her actually falling in love (and ultimately deciding to confess) was pretty recent.

I think that's a thematic strength, where the disjointed and messy timeline shakes us like Hikari is being shaken. The mess is the point.
