Also, I just thought of this. What if all the times we saw Yami sad once she found out that the guy Hikari liked was Yuu is not because Yami was still in love with Yuu but that she knew her friendship with Hikari was in jeopardy? If you go back and re-read 13.5 perhaps she's crying in the rain due to the fear of losing Hikari rather than Yuu.

I really need to read the novelization as I've only read the manga. I might be super off base and there's pertinent information in those novels that contradicts what I've been saying. Welp, I know what I'll be doing tonight after work.

Pretty sure @GennArc pointed this out first when I was arguing the other side (Yuu was a coward for hiding taking the exam from Hikari).
Hahaha i love it when you and @GennArc argue on stuff in the comment section.

But yeah seriously tho, knowing the real reason why yuu was hiding taking the exam from hikari would tell us a lot on whether at that point he already has feelings (or has realise his feelings) for hikari or not.

Tho tbf after yuu and hikari meet up with their old friends and them spilling the beans that yuu was trying to get into the same high school with hikari, she ask him about it during the firework festival and his answer was about him wanting to caught up to her iirc but i dont think yuu was being fully honest there so yeah idk lol

I finally catched up after starting it today.
Oh boy did I stop at a completely different part of the story yesterday. (I also feared for myself when the actual spicy scenes appeared while reading it in public transit)

I had my fair share of spice in Mangas, namely titles like "Aitsu no Kanojo" and "Domestic Girlfriend", so this is something that is up that alley for me.

And to get to that point... I say I stand for Hikari. But like most others are of similar opinion, without Yuu and Aya.

I can understand why Yuu and Aya kept their relationship under the radar, because it was really a relationship of affection and looking for comfort. Both at a slump and both looking for someone to be by their sides. All good in my eyes.

Aya had a broken view of the world, primarily due to her family. She could not understand what was right or wrong. Yuu gave her a reason to keep going. And that is great. The problem is just, Aya's only good memories were with Yuu so the moment she saw him, her feeling flooded over her and she lost it... Big times.

Yuu... Is a pain in the ass. I could not believe this bag of horniness had every possible chance to let it out, but at latest in middle school he should realize that he has to go for it sooner than later, else he will not only lose his first love, but also his purpose. Truthfully, he fumbled. I would not be surprised, if he lost it again and is going into a slump bigger than the last time.

As for Hikari, this girl is too precious. She had everything she could have had for a perfect youth, if that pile of inferiority complex would actually move his ass. I can fully understand Hikari thinking that Yuu does not see her as a love interest, because he was focused on other things. First his inferiority complex, then his balls.

But then, complaining more about it does not matter. Stories in the similar space are not different (I am looking at you Riku from Aitsu no Kanojo...), so I just see what this fire of a story will hold. At the end, it is entertainment.

I'm fully onboard w/ he's a chicken for not asking Hikari out, and that Yuu/Aya is a toxic self destructive mess, but he doesn't preach about how much he loves somebody else. When they meet, he talks about Hikari as a close friend/rival/motivation for taking the exam and how he wants to be on the same level as her. It's Aya who says he's in love w/ Hikari & he denies and she pushes and his response seems like he's either not actually sure of what he felt for Hikari or not ready to admit it.
Are you assuming that Yami’s account in chapter 24 is her interpretation of Yuu’s words?

Yami’s account in the manga:
ISEULE9.png

Yami’s account in the novel:
...

Maybe it was out of guilt toward me or something...
But Yuu started opening up about himself, bit by bit.

He talked about how there was a girl he'd been in love with since he was little.
How she only ever saw him as a friend.

How she was amazing at both academics and sports and had gotten into my school on a recommendation.
How he'd aimed for the same high school just to be close to her.

...And yeah, I already knew he'd crashed and burned at that.

....

We could assume that her words in Chapter 24 are her interpretation of what Yuu's saying, i.e. he's gushing about his friend and she's taking it in the worst possible way. That somewhat fits her profile as at that point in time her life is blowing up and she's deep into self pity and self destruction. It would make sense that anything that happens to her or is said to her is taken at the worst value.

At that period in her life she's also not known for making good decisions. She thought revealing her stepfather's cheating would cause her mother to kick him to the curb and solve all their problems and instead it caused her mother to double-down and try to win the stepfather back.

It comes down to how reliable of a narrator is Yami?

As much as I'd love for the next chapter to be Hikari's reaction to Yuu's confession it makes more sense for this to be the start of a flashback series of chapters in Yuu's perspective so we can finally get 100% of what's going on. It fits the author's MO. Rather than give us an immediate reaction to Hikari witnessing Yami & Yuu kissing, we were given insight into Yami. It only makes sense to me that now we'd be given insight into the workings of the 3rd person in this triangle.

Basically - we never hear directly from him that he's in love w/ Hikari until this confession & Aya is an unreliable narrator & this is a flashback where the retelling is inherently colored by Aya's insecurities and projections.

Granted, I figure he probably knew he was in love w/ Hikari but also believed that she was completely out of reach. Not preaching about an eternal love but lamenting a hopeless one. Would definitely make the growth argument/arc stronger if he knew he was in love & was faced w/ the same easy or risky choice and made better decisions the second go around.

I dunno that he picks up much on her spiraling given he's not sure what to believe from her. But also, despite not thinking the 'ship is particularly good for either of 'em, I think sticking w/ each other 'cause they make each other feel wanted/needed is more less how Aya sees her mother operating/is a standard pattern.

It's one explanation we can surmise on why he doesn't just leave, despite them not actually having sex the first night. And it's pretty easy to see that senpai is on a self-destructive route, hell both the other characters notice this.

And yeah, maybe that's part of why Ayami broke it off. But IMO it's not the worst basis for a relationship, not that it'll matter to someone who's had such bad experience like she had.

Yeah i think we could all agree that if the author did went with the Yuu havent fallen (or hasnt realise his feelings) for Hikari route by the time he took those exam, it would all hinge on Yami being an unreliable narrator and her interpreting Yuu gushing/talking about Hikari as him saying he loves her at that point.

As much as I'd love for the next chapter to be Hikari's reaction to Yuu's confession it makes more sense for this to be the start of a flashback series of chapters in Yuu's perspective so we can finally get 100% of what's going on. No please god, i would take absolutely anything other than another flashback :fml::fml::fml:

Nah but seriously tho, if there is gonna be another flashback, hope we see Hikari response to the confession first.
Like maybe Hikari mentioning about her seeing the Yuu/Yami incident and her not believing the confession because of it, then hikari running away but yuu caught up to her and then whe he start to explain to hikari about his history with yami we get the flashback.
Yuu/Hikari (and Yami too) has to start talking with each other about things and i dont want another flashback to delay it any longer lol

We all assume the title is from Hikari's perspective. What if its actually from Yuu's perspective?

Edit: This is assuming we believe that Yami is an unreliable narrator and that she percieves that Yuu is in love and puts word in his mouth, it is also established Yami is not a reliable person and will lie a lot.

I’m more inclined to view the characters’ perspectives as reflecting the true reality of the story. Some people—particularly Yami’s simps—have argued that Hikari is an unreliable narrator or even delusional, and, well, it really doesn’t seem like she’s either of those. So I don’t see why Yami’s account in Chapter 24 would be merely her subjective interpretation of Yuu’s words rather than what Yuu actually said.

The scene in question was a vulnerable, intimate moment where both characters were openly sharing their circumstances. Yami was clearly being sincere when she confided in Yuu—even if she later tried to frame her circumstances as a hypothetical example. Given the emotional weight of that exchange, I take Yami’s perspective at face value: an accurate account of what really happened.

I figured he doesn't leave b/c he's not the worst and she's crying, but I think they end up having sex that day, it's just that they leave the hotel the first time and then go back (which I guess you're saying is a different day?) I agree he probably knows something is up and I read his telling Aya that she's always lying as frustration w/ her act. I just dunno that he's cognizant of the spiraling b/c their last conversation is such a red flag.

I’m more inclined to view the characters’ perspectives as reflecting the true reality of the story.
So I think we are given a POV split for chapter 21 - Aya seems to perceive Yuu as more into the kiss than Hikari - but I guess that can also be due to time lapse. And Aya says he talked about Hikari endlessly when the narrative has him talk about Hikari like twice and stop when Aya shut it down. Which, as much as I say Aya is an unreliable narrator, I think it's probably more that the author is doing a good job of defining POVs/showing how POV is shaped by feelings/experience.

At least her friends were /only/ eavesdropping and not ,say , live-streaming

Tho I wonder how they’ll react if she snaps and goes like “so why did you kiss my friend” or so but idk if she’ll reveal that

Side note I wonder if “cheek dance” is some borrowed awkward Japanglish phrase but the internet brainrot part of me thought “twerk” at first xP)

"I'm sorry, Yami-senpai. Those times I was banging you? Thinking of Hikari, or rather, trying to forget her. Didn't happen though. Now if she doesn't push me away I'll confess to her tonight. Tough luck, maybe if you didn't ghost me things would've gone another way."

Man, what a nice guy.

But if he said that, he wouldn't be wrong. Harsh truth is still truth. If Yami had not ghosted him, maybe things would've gone another way. That's on Yami.

Summary: so it's alright for Hikari to leave Yuu hanging in front of his bedroom window for 30 minutes to sort her sh*t out, but when Yuu takes 30 mins to sort his far more complicated sh*t out, everyone loses their mind. Does that more or less sum things up?

Wait, what? I have been late to the party into taking this manga more in depth, but who argues that and why? She is a very passive person regarding Yuu in the first part and it's about her realizing her love and giving us diabetes in the process, and that's the only part where we see her input. In what part was she moving the plot actively to say she is an unreliable narrator?

Basically they were arguing that Yuu wasn't remotely interested in Hikari romantically, she was just seeing all his actions through a "he likes me" filter.
I mean... That thing happens? Like, is a normal thing to misinterpret things or make corret guesses based on signals? But in this case is not really like that because he has confessed (unless something like what was discussing some post earlier happens)? A strange thing to latch onto, but ok I suppose.

It’s basically what @story645 said. Like in Chapter 18—people were claiming Yuu wasn’t actually blushing, that it was just Hikari’s perspective, even though she could barely see his face:

It gets even worse on the last page, where Hikari isn’t even looking at Yuu:

Funny thing—before the timeline of events became clearer, some people speculated that Yuu wasn’t blushing because of Hikari, but rather because he was texting Yami on his phone.

They also called Hikari a stalker for waiting to meet Yuu at the train station in Chapter 2, observing him in Chapter 4, and for eavesdropping on his conversation with his kouhai in Chapter 12.

Yami simps, man…
