Kind of weird, but they were in a rough spot and were seemingly conscripting as many people as they could when they grabbed him. Personally I find it weirder that he went through the sort of education where he would be writing a thesis, while he is a commoner. It hasn't so far seemed like the sort of setting where commoners would have access to higher education.
