Are they behind a paywall? I used to read from the kdtscans website and the chapters were out earlier but also didnt have to pay.
Yeah, the newest chapters are behind a patreon paywall. It differs a bit from series to series it seems, the cat girl manga is one chapter behind, but the goblin slayer wizard girl lookalike isekai is five chapters behind. My guess is that they're planning to have all the series' newest chapters behind patreon paywall.

I'm gonna be honest here: if Bagek drops this and this group continues to scanlate with their less than stellar quality + scummy practices (paying for pirated manga you couldn't get otherwise, really?) then I'll boycott this one and inform everyone about KDT's scummy behavior whenever I see any of their translations.

One thing this group got right that the other didn’t was this panel:

hHjcWMo.jpeg

Why is he asking if it’s okay for Ayaka to join her own family dinner?

H68qBo0.jpeg

This is still clunky but it’s much closer to the correct intention of “Is that also okay with you, Ayaka-san?”

??? a paywalling scanlator takes up a series that's already been taken up a few days ago, reposts a chapter already released by said group that took it up, and then proceeds to do a worse job. Even if the other group were to release once a month and these guys release daily, I'd still follow along with the other group for the sake of smooth and actually enjoyable dialogue. also, PAYWALLERS... no amount of excuses is gonna stop me (and clearly others) from judging that.

you want clunky? compare page 30 from KDT scans (Ch 5.) to page 12 from Bagek Scans (Ch 5.2).

[couldn't get images to embed...]

Bagek Scans' flows much nicer than KDT scans'. KDT scans' one made me take a step back and go "what the hell am I reading-" and I went and checked the other version and sure enough it's way nicer to read and understand, the dialogue is actually natural and realistic sounding.

(Sure enough, those links didn't embed the images and were a pain)

Worse job is an opinion, and that's totally valid based on individual taste. I'm okay with that opinion.
But... you think we're paywalling this? Not at all, we're not gonna do that for this manga. Don't say something before you even try to understand the circumstance. We were already working on this chapter before the other group uploaded because WE GOT THE PERMISSION FROM THE ORIGINAL SCANLATOR. We don't want to start a war with another group by calling out their name (Bagek Scans) in the disclaimer page. They might do a better translation, we're fine with them, but we, KDT Scans, were already working on this before they showed up, and we decided to keep the project going.

For some titles that we actually paid to get the official raw, we do that, but we never kept the chapters permanently behind the paywall, just lagging behind a few chapters. Both paid and non-paid readers got updates at the same time.

Oh. That's why the story felt awfully familiar. It's still C5. Dad (and pretty much everyone except the fmc) is very eager to hire a son-in-law.

KDT isn't as bad as other groups that paywall. They at least continue to update on here with some lag. It's not like, say, Art Lapsa, who get to like 8-10 chapters, stop, and possibly even delete the chapters they've uploaded here while continuing to only upload on their own website.

I'm OK with groups that are like "we'll upload on Mangadex on a regular schedule, but you can read a little ahead if you want to pay for it."

Is it kinda sketchy? Yeah. But scanlation is sketchy to begin with. I don't like monetization for profit because it tends to attract unwanted extra attention from publishers, but I'm less put off when the scans are still made available generally and not just held hostage.

Or when you get a group like Galaxy Degen that explicitly hoard series and only post on here infrequently or when someone tries to jump their claim.

But with that said, this translation was a lot rougher. Maybe they could work with Bagek to cooperate and make a better translation with less individual work?
Totally agree while I don't like lag that paywalls cause. at least with KDT I don't have to worry if I'll ever see another chapter like would with galaxy degen. That and their work is usually pretty good.

They paywall a couple of things here and there but never permanently that I've seen. They just release a few of their series earlier on their patreon. Which I can live with waiting a while longer if that what they do to pay for the raws.

You shouldn't really ever believe that a group is for profit because they need to pay for raws, you can get more or less all raws for free if you look. Or you could get someone who's already buying it to provide them, I already provide a couple of groups with volume raws that I rip myself.

There's basically two reasons why you shouldn't pay for scanlations. First is obviously that you're getting ripped off for buying a pirated product. Paying for piracy is a scam. Second is that no money goes to the original creator, and won't let the manga keep going like buying volume raws would. Your money would be far better off supporting the creator and industry and buying the Japanese manga volumes to support them instead of supporting scummy scanlation groups honestly. Another group can easily pick up a manga, but you can't continue a manga that's been cancelled. You could say that supporting for profit scanlation groups is detrimental, because it encourages this scummy behavior.

Sorta yes, but not really, like yes you can find raws out there if you bother searching or know how to rip, which is easy (as lot of these publisher websites that "pay" lock chapters, you can go around easily to get it for free), but more often than not, alot of those "volume" raws are watermarked or the quality is worse than a published chapter (as they tend to compile published chapters to make a fake volume), but at the same time, you can't expect everyone to hand volume raws, magazine raws or paid raws at good quality for free, as some groups or people charge you back more than what they actually cost, is a problem that goes both ways (i used to provide "paid" raws from a couple of these websites for some spanish groups, but after they updated their website i stopped, since is easier to rip now, but i've seen quite a few raw providers charge you back per page)

Of course not going to defend anyone here, but out of these groups that use the coin sytem, at least i can give it to Asmodeus that for the most part only work on series using volume raws or paid only raws, compared to groups like UTOON, that only work using free raws that got shit quality and often censored, and never gonna get better ones, obviously you shouldn't be throwing money on these people ko-fi or patreon garbage, as you should be supporting the author instead, even if you can't read them for shit, this coin system was already a problem with novel translations, now it carried over to manga

This kind of feels like MTL, same to their novels too. Seriously though, who the fuck paywalls pirated manga and novels?
