Soon as I saw "I want to look like you", I was just like "oh,so the slime becomes a cat, which is probably what it looks like when it eventually becomes Ridd's pet. I guess the actual cat's gonna die at some point and is just the setup for that", lmao.

Looks like the manga straight up cut out a chapter that becomes immediately relevant in this arc so I'll have to drop it here. Maybe the manga wants to do it as a flashback chapter for when the big moment happens but I seriously question why.

Reid invents a new form of attack magic (what Sandra refers to on the bottom of page 2) that completely upends conventional magic theory. He names it "Compression Magic". Normally in magic, you have to create an image in your mind, infuse the necessary mana, and then unleash the completed spell. The more large scale the magic, the more concentration and mana is needed. For example, a small fireball is much simpler to imagine, infuse, and cast compared to a large meteor.

Reid wondered what would happen if, instead of unleashing the magic immediately, he were to restrain the spell and infuse even more mana. The result was devastating. He was able to create the image of a fireball in his mind, infuse a small initial amount of mana to complete the spell, and then restrain the spell to infuse even more mana until it ballooned to the size most people associate with large scale magic. This is an abnormal and very dangerous procedure and Reid observes that the spell was growing increasingly wild within his hands until he was forced to fire it into the sky.

Sandra was then able to replicate his theory and procedure on the first try. She banned him from using this spell (we all know how this is going to end) until she completed a report for Reiner on it. Compression Magic would make most large scale magics completely obsolete. The total mana infused was the same, but the required effort for the mental image was much smaller. It took a technically completed spell and infused more mana than normal to achieve proportionally greater effects. Once again, magic is an extreme rarity in this world and most people don't really approach it the way Reid does. In fact, conventional wisdom has the country researching Mana Potions so that their existing mages can spam large scale magics more often instead of figuring out how to make casting them more efficient. And to give you an idea as to how dangerous Compression Magic is, and/or a testament to Fara's own genius intellect surpassing Reid's, Fara was able to deduce and replicate Compression Magic after having only seen it once. On her first day of magic training. She also experienced the same sensation that Reid felt and thought the same thing he did when the magic became increasingly agitated in her hands. The two are a perfect pair.

Cat and Slime here are going to be super important in later arcs. Their introduction here isn't totally random. The two of them eventually become Meredy's guards. The Cat can shrink/gigantify and has decent combat experience. Also, he's good at finding hot springs which Reid really wanted to include in the new mansion because Fara requested one. The Slime can shapeshift and becomes Meredy's body double. These two play a big role in The War arc later on. The Cat even becomes Reid's mount in The War. As for Reid's "unconventional" thoughts about magic, it ties into a conspiracy plot thread involving the Ronamis bloodline with hints that should've been dropped when Reiner remembers how he first met Nunnally. Gist of it is the Ronamis are a Count family that dates back to the founding of the Empire but have no other notable achievements. Even Arwin, then Crown Prince, had no knowledge of what made Ronamis so special. When asked, Nunnally herself didn't know either and simply said "I think there was a famous mage in our family long ago or something." The Ronamis bloodline would also become relevant in The War arc too. From what's been revealed so far, the nobles in the know seem to want Ronamis women to make archmage babies.

I love slimes, so seeing one deal with the absolute tread of sentience was very fun. Did not expect a black cat romance, but I'm also totally down for that. That was adorable and peak.
