Anyone got tips for legal/ethical alternatives for the more obscure series? I’d rather not go full pirate mode, but there are some gems that are now practically untraceable.
Learn Japanese.

Otherwise buy the raws and use an automatic translator tool like ichigoreader or cotrans to translate them, or use panel cleaner to ocr them yourself and translate them with chatgpt or something.
Anything else is stricly illegal. Though if you buy the raws, I see no reason why you shouldn't allow yourself to read scanlations of them morally speaking.

My website (wink wink) just got hit by a DMCA (by freakin Webtoon.com, fuck you) just by linking to MangaDex.

None of the content had anything to do with webtoons or manwha, it was fanart of Ochia-san and Musou Telepathy... Yes I did link to the MangaDex pages of the two series I mentioned, but again, they have NOTHING to do with webtoons or webtoon.com unless they were uploaded in webtoon.com too or something.

if you look closer at the stuff in lumendatabase, you will see that these dmca claims are made by stupit bots that just scrape the words they are looking for together somehow.

check out this thread on reddit. it explains a recent DMCA from the bird to google:

they request the removal of "Sashimi".
Copyright claim 70
Kind of Work: UnspecifiedDescription Copyrighted adult comics published by Irodori, Inc. Pursuant to 17 USC sec. 512(c)(3)(A)(ii) the official website for 'Sashimi' includes a representative list at the below url:
Original URLs:
Sashimi is indeed an artist under irodoris wing

BUT all of the removed results in claim 70 have nothing to do with the author Sashimi or his works. the links only contain the word sahimi or fragments of it and are found on the targeted websites.

most of the links refer to a manwha called conquering the academy with just a sashimi knife

others just contain the letters in the right order:

nhentai(REDACTED)/character/musashi-miyamoto/?page=3
. . . /musashi-miyamoto

. . . /muSASHI-MIyamoto

i bet nearly 50% of DMCA notices are such Bot/ AI Bullshit.
at this point this is done deliberately to bully the targeted websites. the above example is clearly a false claim. unfortunately there is no punishment for sending out such false bullshit.

Yeah probably. Three of my webpages are listed in that lumendatabase.
Forgot the exact wording, but something about backlinking to a pirate website is "abetting" piracy.
Description of claim: Copyrighted webtoons published by WEBTOON Entertainment Inc. Sites are back linking illegal webtoon scanlation sites. This is contributory infringement. Pursuant to 17 USC 512(c)(3)(A)(ii) the official website for 'Licensed Webtoon Comics' includes a commulative episode list at the below url:
But the problem (and a huge source of annoyance to me) is that NONE of the pages they've linked are webtoons or have anything to do with webtoon.com

exactly. this whole process is broken and seemingly deliberately in disatvantage for the accused.
no one really reviews this stuff. in this above shown example from reddit, all the accused could have filed a counter claim and would have been in the right because non of the allegedly infringing URLs infringed works of the author sashimi as falsely claimed in the notice.

I assume a DMCA counter claim requires an actual name and address, etc. like it's done on youtube? If that's true, I can see why most people didn't bother.

should i just go read manhuas?
recommendations please?
no.
manhuas and manwhas are a major part of the problem. imho
i remember times when the new chapters of solo leveling caused the site to crash from overload. And not just that. i hate to admit it but the [REDACTED] from kakao are super aggressive when it comes to their garbage. if MD had banned this south korean bullshit years ago, when the discussion arose, we would now not have been in the shit we are in.

i hope kim drops some more shit on these [REDACTED] kakao [REDACTED] and sends them to hell along with their slop.

I sent one. Yes it does, address, phone number, and name and all.
If you can, keep us posted on this here - I would be very interested in seeing what happens when someone pushes back on one of these bad claims. (And if you end up needing financial assistance for legal representation to run this out, I would kick a few bucks into the kitty.)
