I could tell from the uniform (actually looks a bit like a middle schooler uniform but I guess high schoolers can where that type too).

He does look a lot older, so it's a bit jarring, but they say smoking ages you. Surprised his granny didn't at least ask him to quit smoking since it destroys your health. Maybe this story will explore the harms of extreme types of parenting on both ends (extremely controlling vs extremely permissive).

Also what's he doing walking around the city barefoot? In the first part of the chapter you can see he clearly has outside shoes.
