I wish someone would translate this manga on this site. I really would like to see more of this story.

I'm only at chapter 6 right now, but her friends are kind of crappy. The one that she was friends with in high school seems fine with drifting away from her and not defending her when the guys at the mixer were being assholes (the second time) because she's now popular and has made up a whole fake personality to go along with that crowd. While the newer friend kinda feels manipulative and like she doesn't really like the MC except as a charity case that makes her look better by association. Like she wants to go visit the MC's club, but I feel like it's going to be only because it has hot guys and she figures she can get attention from them.

I might be misreading how things are going to go, but there are some bad vibes from the both of them.

EDIT: Having read further on, her older friend makes a bit of a comeback, but I still don't trust the new one.

I haven’t read this manga (and won’t, judging by what it’s going for), but the fact that the main character is still clearly overweight on the cover of volume 7 says a lot.

From the description, it sounds like her main issue, being ridiculed for being fat, could be tackled through something pretty straightforward: losing weight.

But instead of putting any real effort towards that, the story seems to lean into her getting emotional support from two nice guys while she stays the same.

We’re supposed to see this as some deep journey of self-esteem and maturity, but really it just sounds like a wish-fulfillment fantasy for someone who doesn’t want to change but desperately wants to be told she’s perfect anyway.

Classic case of a writer projecting her own issues into fiction. Why actually improve when you can just be validated?

Maybe the award this story won was for female empowerment?

I'm only commenting because I guess it triggered me as a former fat guy. If you're an adult, it's your own fault you're fat. Also means it's in your hands to change that.

Hmmm, you've missed the point of the story. But that isn't surprising since you did admit you judged it based on the volume cover and description.

Hono isn't looking to be told she's perfect. She's looking for genuine friendship/companionship, she just happens to find someone she likes along the way. Changing your appearance is one way of 'fixing' your self-esteem issues, sure. But you just end up a whitewashed tomb, pretty on the outside but dead on the inside. The story reveals an even simpler solution: your appearance isn't what's holding you back from forming deep connections; it's projecting your negative views of yourself onto others. You attract what you are within.

If just not being fat was the solution, there wouldn't be so many conventionally attractive/skinny people with self-esteem issues. Over the story, Hono's self-esteem grows because the way she views herself changes, and her connections with genuine people flourish as a result 😊

Another sidenote:

what's wrong with wish-fulfilment stories for women? You see stories of fat/unttractive men getting with beautiful women all the time ( Accel World, Asahina Wakaba to ○○ na Kareshi, Ore Monogatari!!, Onani Master Kurosawa, "Ugly Bastard" genre, the countless series with an ugly dad+young, attractive mom, etc )

FMC never wants to be seen as "perfect", she just wants to live normally without being ridiculed for simply existing. Which is a completely normal mindset, regardless of your appearance. What do you tell skinny people who are still "ugly"? It's their fault and they should just get plastic surgery? At some point you have to stop trying to fix every insecurity and just live life as you are.

And honestly if you look around, there are MANY overweight/"unattractive" people dating fit/"attractive" people. I have been with or have been very attracted to overweight people who had wonderful personalities. You have a lot of inner work to do if you're "triggered" by a very tame, inoffensive story you won't even read a single chapter of :/

P.S. a lot of "former fat" people are extremely prone to relapsing at some point, or even multiple times in their lives. If that ever happens to you, I hope you'll find peace and acceptance within yourself.

edit: lol nice alt acct dude

Dude, how can you judge based on the cover?, And what is that necessity to talk of the writer like if you know them personally?
