The Five Star Stories last issue was 27 (finishing volume 10) on October 2004, and it would be completely silent (and the copyright registration expired) until 21 years later, when I wanted to buy Volume 1 to start my Toypress collection, and someone wanted 600.00 for the first 3 issues. I toyed with the idea to print and translate my own. Maybe I can print 30 copies and make a little profit to keep me motivated to do poorly paid real work but I was going to complete the series.
I contacted the subreddit of the five-star stories and there were about 60-70 inquiries "yeah, we are excited, thanks, man please do it, we'd love it" and I got specifically requested to work on VOLUME 11 (because it continues the Toypress edition)
People were asking me if they needed to deposit something or send me money, which I refuse, because, to start a project, you can't demand money without "hard proof" that you will deliver. I took 8 months, about $3k investing, and a lot of trial and error to get the translation correctly (I got confident because I'm Italian myself, so I speak it natively) All this effort for one A*hole to create a troll account and started screaming to everyone that I will scam them, that the translation makes no sense, that is all MTL, all bad and "beware" of dealing with me. As if I want to scam you so you don't buy books again? so we just stay here seating for another 20 years of untranslated manga? Nagano doesn't give a shit about you, he has a movie that doesn't let people to watch it and connects the story at a very important level "Gothicmade"
So the dude was made moderator and he obsesses over my movements at any moment, but he doesn't add anything of value to the community. I printed 30 books of Volume 1 (yeeyy, no more paying 600.00 for volume 1, only 35.00) 30 of Volume 11 and all the 70 guys started THANKING the new dude for warning them. Of what, dude? I want you to GET THE DAMN BOOK!! and EVERY BOOK!! Why in blazes I would use "The Five Star Stories" to scam people, it is not even popular here. I just wanted to read in on paper in English just like the Japanese.
But I will not stop, even if I lose all the money printing Volume 1 and 11, I have many plans to get you guys excited for the Five Stars, so Get ready to have very advanced chapters printed in English, from volume 19 and eventually Volume 20.
I could start releasing the complete Volume 18 for free and just sell you "the middle volumes" on self print.
I will see what I can do, and if I fail, then I will take my loss and move on, but if I win, you get to read the COMPLETE story of "The Five Star Stories" it's not gonna happen for free. Nagano Mamoru can chase me to the end of Earth for 30 printed copies.
I will not release it digitally in full ever, maybe a few sample chapters, or advanced volumes, but that's about it.

Using Machine translation in Italian is really strange because they use a lot of latin nuances, sarcasm and silly but elegant words sometimes. I need to constantly double check the Japanese text and the Italian text and find a happy medium that I will be satisfied to print it on text.

But it's not gonna happen for free. This is the only way.

If you just want some reimbursement for your efforts, why not open channels for donations?

If you straight out print and sell volumes of manga that aren't in public domain, you could get into legal trouble. It could drag the whole community with you too.
