Considering he gains skills through seeing and experiencing them first hand as well as receiving attacks, what are the chances he just got some massive electricity resistance boost thanks to being cooked like that? Making him another person she can touch and interact with.

I'm still going with my previous guess that he's going to end up teaming up with her or saving her and, since she's a spirit, they'll end up with some type of spirit contract or summoning.

I appreciate the backstory and that Cross is such a marshmallow that there was no way he wouldn't eventually win over Zappy-chan.

But my favorite part was that half-page panel on p. 16 when the Masters were rescuing her.

It's always a treat to see just how disastrous they are for the entire planet around them.

We already did before he got into a duel with the noble brat.
ohh the chapter was missing from MD so I didn't immediately find it. When the other orphans were hurt by the noble house, prior to him accepting the challenge?

Yeah, he does only get mad on behalf of others, and I had forgotten that was the particular catalyst that lead to him confronting nobles. I do wonder if it'll be another level at this point, if only for the context of this being a child being kidnapped, instead of his former bullies-turned-friends being assaulted.

Fairly standard fare for shonen protagonists, but classics are classics for a reason.

I mean it worked for Ash and Pikachu. 🤷‍♂️

Not just him or shonen. Peter Parker is similarly snarky but when those he loves are in danger, he gets serious. And Harry Dresden from the Dresden Files is a wizard with serious depression issues and failure complexes, but threaten those in his care, or worse his loved ones, and no force on Earth will stop his wrath. In the twelfth book Changes
Harry learns he has a 5 year-old daughter who has been kidnapped by his vampire enemies. He didn't know about her existence before this moment, but it galvanizes him into a terror where he is willing to walk to the evil fae Queen Mab for power to save his daughter. Mab is only too happy to give him the power, as she sees love as a way to turn good men to darker paths. By the end of the book which is a few days after his learning about his daughter, Harry has destroyed the Red Court, the entire court, root to branch with only a few scant members around who were in well protected places from the dangerous curse Harry sent on their asses.
Moral of the story, don't f!ck with Harry Dresden's loved ones.

Crap, my brain's poking holes to that setup. They're located inside a special barrier where the old lady can make up any rule she wants to some extent, why not give everyone lightning immunity so she can enjoy her childhood with the rest of the kids? Kinda wish they used the weakening crystals as the reason that she can't cast that.

She's also old, and it's been established that her powers no longer work as well as they used to.

Saying it's the red court doesn't do it justice. He ended an entire race of vampires by reversing their bloodline curse. And then went and threatened the rest. Hell, one of his wizard friends then went and dropped a meteor on another group just to reinforce the point. If I remember correctly, he also threatened to release all the prisoners in the dimensional magic prison he became the warden of. Basically don't fuck with Dresden.
