Not really considering "rich people" and "athleticism" tend to shy away from each other like the plague in medieval times. the most they'd be able to think is that the bat is a mechanism for making the ball into a projectile weapon.

It is also had been used by pitchers to made the ball spin faster while throwing, making it easier for pitchers to throw a pitch and difficult for batters to hit. That's why pine tar had been illegal for pitchers. But not for batters.
