Let's take the revolver, it has a lower capacity, slower reload speed (unless you have a speedloader) requires more maintenance and cleaning to prevent malfunctions, then there is the cylinder gap, which is prone to get shit in it and also suffers from some pressure loss in comparison to a self contained gun like a pistol. There really isn't any practical reason to choose a revolver over a pistol other than rule of cool.

Revolvers actually have less maintenance than semi-auto handguns; for the most part they only need the barrel cleaned and a drop or two of oil every once in a while, while a semi-auto needs a partial disassembly to clean properly. There's also a lot more that can fail on a semi-auto. The real clincher in this case though would be the ease of swapping individual bullets, since you don't need to unload an entire magazine to swap just one bullet, and there's no worry of losing the magazine in the process.
Also, a six-shooter wouldn't really be lacking in capacity compared to the 7-round capacity of the Desert Eagle being brandished.

What I found problem with is him saying he wants a double-action revolver and then describing the operation of a single-action.

There is that dialogue on p9, "but that wouldn't match my understanding of your hobby". Unless MC was a serial killer before he died, this should refer to something like airsoft.

Edit to say: I changed my mind. My headcannon is OG MC was a serial killer, and the "trespasser" is a victim making a run to safety. Sorry Caro, your ears are cute but your days are numbered. Time to put lotion on its skin.

Why handgun?
isn't it better for close range some shotgun or even SMG?

or is he looking for some short range weapon while holding his rifle? Then he could just use underbarrel attached knife for that reason and in constant closed space just shotgun/smg.
