This merchant prick is the classic pathetic guy who gains some power and lords it over others to compensate his insecurities... and his tiny dick. I had to XD.

I don't much have anything against the maid, I just think her start was weak, but I do think she has potential to develop, how it starts isn't exactly how it ends.

Time for a bit of role-reversal, dear scumbag merchant.

This time, you take the rod.

I half expected Elpis to just buy her freedom earlier. It does feel like he has that kind of money, even though the other merchants bodyguard placed doubts on him being that well off. And would have been fun to taunt the orc slayer by showing off, but also feels like he thinks they don't deserve that money.

I am curious as to what she got the debt from, it doesn't feel like it is an accumulation from her past.

I hope this arc ends with next chapter, like I said before I couldn’t care less about this maid, nothing in the backstory have justified her shitty racist behavior with mc.
At least she is aware that she is a pain in the ass one could say :haa:
Thanks for the translation
Was inspired and wrote too much so long yap warning.

I would say that Japan's homogeneity propaganda makes the average japanese perceive racism different from people from countries that racism was manly from slavery of other races.
My opinion from observing their cultural works and a bit of information here and there, is that racism for them is mainly in the shape of; japanese vs outsiders (in particular China and Korea) propaganda from old wars and conflicts. So most of them have a mentality that real world racism is even justified in most cases because its a "tool derived from wanting to protect your nation", post ww2 interactions with USA and other countries didn't help and made their belief of "its japan against the world!" grow even more.
Like that popular trope where the isekai'ed japanese person is hated because black hair and eyes (literally the most predominant colours in the world, like 80%...) are rare and a bad omen, i think that most of them still believe that in Europe and USA everyone is blonde with blue eyes...

This whole thing makes them (and other comic writers from Asia), most of the times, to write very poor entertainment works with racial narratives, most of times they are taken way to lightly or without proper care.

In here we have Elpis, that is so jaded with racist interactions that he doesn't take them to heart anymore, and concluded that the maid has value to the person he values as a friend (Margit), he conditioned himself see the person value beyond those initial interactions, it's noble of he? Yes, but from people that saw or suffered real racism inside your country simply because of your phenotypes characteristics, doesn't mattering from which nation these traits stem from, his attitude seems far fetched for them.
A more realistic approach would be that while he does save her, because he believes she can change for the better in this aspect, and mostly because of her value for Margit, but in no way would he consider her a friend even after this, not without a real good development arch, but we all know that the nuance this would need will not be present in the chapters to be, and the whole "and all lived happy ever after" is the most probable to happen.

For them racism ends as a quick cheap tool to generate initial conflict, that when the conflict is over all is forgiven. Or just a tool for make the main characters see like the 'good people' when they are opposed to it.
who didn't ever read a comic where the isekai'ed protagonist don't treat the cute beast girl as less and she instantly think they are the next incarnation of isekai Jesus?
In here one of racism's facet (mixed-blood people) is used as a base for a cool fantasy element, saying their eyes resembles the evil god. But the author could very well have used a plot like [Sometimes people happens to be born with eyes resembling the evil god and are persecuted because of it] the the whole racial aspect could be avoided. Not saying what the author can write or not, but an nuanced topic benefits from a nuanced approach that these stories usually lacks.

To cement an example of their poor vision about racism (this one is from a Korean comic), take example 'Get Schooled' where the author decided that a good representation of racism would be koreans suffering racism in a school inside Korea, from black people, because in said school/village the korean kids with non mixed or 'pure' heritage with black people are the minority.
To say that when that work got popular outside Korea some trouble happened goes without saying. (There is a bit more to this case tho).

tl,dr: All that to say, yeah, asian comic writers (or maybe mainly korean, chinese and japanese, because they are the most predominant for the rest of world), usually suck at writing nuanced racism.

And i got a bit angry because of all the dumb reactions you got. But these works and the people who read them are mostly young (seinen demographic doesn't mean shit), so i guess it's expected this reaction when their precious waifu is criticized.
The manga is pretty cool still, a good random find!
