Calliope's initial introduction didn't endear her to me much, but by this point she must be one of my favorite characters. There's a certain irony in her passionate defense of Akira, when she was basically playing Tessa's role back then.

The context was totally different when Calliope did it. The crowd had turned on Akira, and it was very apparent she was taking control of the situation to cool things down. Tessa doesn't look like she has another motive besides crushing him.

On a different note, Tessa's outfit is so obviously a sailor fuku that it's a little distracting. I assume Akira's thoughts are meant to be hanging a lampshade on it but it feels too indirect.

Seems kind of ridiculous, lmao. Going with a group of elites (who are scouting) into unknown territory and going with a group of elites (who are guiding) into unknown territory are the exact same thing.

Agreed. And even before the reveal that she was trying to defuse the situation, I assumed that there was a subtle political element about it: by showcasing that the first princess of Pansylvania can handle a mysterious scary super mage that just blew up a mighty artifact (implicitly suggesting his magic power is beyond calculation), she protected the country's image as the top dog in magic.

That said, I think it's still too soon to gauge Tessa's goals here. In her first scene, she was shown criticizing the family brand's overpricing, calling it a "scam", and was described as someone who took up adventuring. Now I'm wondering if she already knows or suspects that Akira's stronger, and believes that only a spectacular demonstration will change the patriarch's views, hence the provocation.

Well the latest raw 170 leaves a cliffhanger. It appears her golem (and yes she can summon a golem as well) to smash MC's golem but who knows. 171 should be out in a couple days and we'll know for sure. Also the usual Dal Young everyone's faces look like someone just shoved a 2x4 up their asses when anything happens.

I get wanting to up the ante, but why the heck is the ultra mega super rare Golem being used this early by another person? Author can't think of another way for MC to fight another summoner that isn't making use of an earlier deus ex machina.

She's my fav, I really like her energy and optimism.

She's also a good gal in a kingdom full of shifty individuals, a great fighter that combines magic, swords and martial arts, and an enthusiastic wingwoman (although I wouldn't have minded if she joined the Akira-bowl too). What's not to like?

Also, not to get into an 'eagles to Mordor' argument, but couldn't they cut the travel time significantly and avoid dangers by using oh, I don't know, an airship?

They actually talk about it in chapter 164: there are constant storms over the forest, so flying is a no go.
