I actually want the opposite. I want to see him fail, yet still have no regrets about his choice in the end. That would directly challenge Sensei’s philosophy that big dreams lead to big disappointment. That would be a great foil to the main condesension of the narrative and him as a character. Big dreams inevitably lead to big disappointment, arguably whether you succeed in them or fail in them, you end up with no mountains to climb or a shell of an existence as we have seen in the previous stories. What truly matters is that the kids are allowed to dream, fail, and go on anyways which his hostile attitude towards ambitious students fails to address, he never fulfills that mentor role giving them a pillar of support as a confidant because he has been conflating his personal trauma with his percieved reality of the world. He fails to see how his use of personal anecdote isnt allowing him to be an excellent mentor/educator because he's trying too hard to make sure the kids dont end up like him instead of trying harder to make sure the kids end up better than him even if they fail.

Unless you're a natural like Magnus, I don't think it is a good idea. He is already struggling in a rank where the geniuses struggle and eating each other. Even if he climbed the rank, he will facing greater giants. But yeah, i'm not an athlete so I don't know their mindset

I think one of the main point of the story is how dream is blinding. You sacrificed your entire future for your dream and when it failed, you got less than nothing left. You tried to hold on to it so much that the dream itself became twisted like that girl who want to become a voice actor or the idol guy. You might get lucky and your family is still their to help you get up like the girl but for the idol guy, you basically crawl back to normalcy.

Like boxer or mma fighter who passed their prime and still fighting. It was only going to result in brain damage and broken legacy.

The point is knowing when to give up. That you did your best and it's fine to leave.

Sure but he can refute that logic with "one success, ten other failures" as prev examples tho other than them keeping in touch or also Being really into Shogi idk how many would know him as a graduate versus the principal going outta her way to make a speech about it. Syol
Think he should have a backup/side hustle idk if it's bad in jp these days but I can imagine ppl having 2-3 part time jobs

But it's not like he ever shut it down without proper research versus just being like "that's too ambitious /unrealistic, just become another cog in the wheel office worker"

Tho I wonder if he'd encourage someone to find a career if they're like "I wanna be a stay at home mom/housewife" bc while some ppl in the west looks down on it, it's still pretty common in jp to where an OL would quit/retire after getting married

didn't he commit himself to drop out bc of his losses against the geniuses ? I wonder if there are Shogi streaming channels where he plays against viewers and gets paid Even if he loses
