JC's or Joshi Chuugakusei's are in middle school yes, but unlike America middle school in Japan is 7-9th grade.
In her case, she's a 9th grader, which is the same as a freshmen in America. MC is 17 so he's either in 11th or 12th. I don't remember if they ever said if he was a 2nd or 3rd year (11th or 12th)
