could've been a great chapter but the paneling is really, really not great, like pretty bad, really bad

i won't fault this manga for its artstyle but this slice of life/iyashikei type paneling work really does not work in moments with a lot of emotional weight

The kiss was sweet and all, but I can't help but feel like it's out of place?
Like, who gives a kiss - their first kiss - to someone who not even a minute ago opened up about his family dying and being betrayed by some nondescript rat bastard?

I know it'll be a positive thing in the manga, but realistically the kiss was definitely not appropriate at such a time.
It was to combat his "person like me mentality"

To show that he had value

God damn. That kiss was a power move though, but still damn. People really just never asked if the rumor was true or not, they just accepted that it's reality that he "killed his sister" and never bothered wondering why would someone spread such rumors. Actually heart wrenching

the entire school didn't turn on him per say. the adults actually helped him out while the students were the ones spreading rumors around. no one else knew who the perpetrator that started everything was because Hajime didn't say anything about it. Hajime just gave up on the students after they started talking behind his back. He had people who were nice to him but they were doing so out of pity rather than empathy and didn't stand up for him or push back against the rumors. This part is very important as it's one of the reasons why he fell for Chinatsu as she got angry for him and cried for him when he couldnt do so himself. Yes Hajime has become unable to cry due to this entire incident.
I think you missed @Rafalga's point; he's complaining about Kanesaki being a loose end which then goes against the principle of Chekhov's Gun.

If the author wanted Kanesaki to be irrelevant to the story then they did not need to give him a face and a name. He could've easily been replaced by a generic game of telephone gone wrong and we'd still arrive at the same result.

But the betrayal makes it so much more meaningful. He lost his entire immediate family, his "best friend" he trusted with this traumatic secret viciously stabbed him in the back, and then most of the student body took the rumor at face value and either saw a murderer or an outcast to be pitied. If it were "just" telephone gone wrong then it would hurt, sure. And he'd probably still internalize some of that derision and blame, yeah. But that cruel betrayal that took his trauma that's maybe weeks old at most, and then weaponized it against him in a way that didn't just twist the knife but outright gouged the wound?

That is how you get someone whose faith in humanity is so numb that he neither bothers with the opinions of others nor allows them to get close to him. And in that case, Kanesaki served his purpose. People want to see him get punished- be it systemically, socially, karmically, or physically- but y'know what? "Living well is the best revenge"; MC can start a new chapter of his life via a happy relationship with the FMC, someone whose emotional support and validation will do wonders for his mental and emotional health. And Kanesaki can become just a bad memory left in the dust.

If Mangaupdates is right, this is the artist's first work (first published work?), I think is fine for their first work, it delivered a lot in a single chapter and it came out clearly. Sure it was done in a more of a matter of fact, it lacked a more nuanced language, the artist doesn't seem able to deliver subtle expression changes either, hopefully they improve with time.
