Really hate how people mix up the two or even say "whatever, it's the same"

Of the main cast the only gyarus are Madoka, Kujaku the former prez, and perhaps Hibino. Inukai is kind of a fake gyaru, she just dresses as one as part of her "highschool debut"

Yankees are delinquents, specifically of the violent and/or juvenile criminal kind, or those who might be mistaken for them. Originating in how that's how the Americans stationed at the military bases in Japan were perceived.
Gyaru are your heavy makeup, lots of exposed skin sluts. On the extreme end with the manba style, with bleached hair, dark fake tan, and lots of brightly colored makeup and glitter.

Overlap isn't unheard of, but it's not exactly common either. More typically you'll see a manba gyaru paired with a yankee dude as a 0 IQ couple to be the butt of a gag.

A yankee is more of style and attitude: blonde hair/flashy hair, (historically) flashy embroidered clothes, love of motorcycles or scooters, etc. They are brash and usually aggressive (especially for Japanese) but not necessarily violent.

I am not going to be able to properly convey this, but in Japan there is a huge pressure for society harmony via conformity. I had a great example in another conversation where a Japanese person who was working in the US said he got a huge shock when he said to a coworker "Its cold today" and the coworker said back "Not really". In Japan, even if you don't agree you're supposed to say you agree to not cause any social friction.
Yankees deliberately and consciously flout that to various degrees. A delinquent may give outward efforts of conforming to Japanese social customs.

Yankee was chosen because there was an idealization of American culture (or more accurately, the japanese idea of american cultue) especially the blonde hair.
And the most common Americans encountered were American soldiers. Big, rough, zero fucks given about Japanese social customs.
