Mangadex to purge titles for legal reasons

:pepehmm: some schizo in discord is spreading word that new chapters will soon be paywalled, only coming out and remaining free for the 2nd week of their release. And old chapters will be permanently paywalled.
To do that they would have to make all the scan groups agree to not publish in any other site or do the translation themselves. This is high unlikely since most of the old chapters are already scrapped in many other sites and, unless they are receiving most of the revenue, the groups would just stop posting here. This also would make a strong case for a total take-down of the entire site since this is why many manhwas focused pages were taken down.

Because it is pretty much the same thing.
They're registered as a company under(?) NamiComi on the UK, so they're probably scrapping everything "problematic" so they can go legal.
In a few months or years, they're going to have to delete every single manga translation cause it's going to be categorized as "pirated content" in the eye of the law.

I wouldn't even be mad about it if that was the case, I just wish they'd be open about it.

What I would be mad about is if they retroactively got licenses for scanlated manga, then made a profit by selling subscriptions to read fan-scanlated manga without paying anything back to the groups that did all the work.

And before anyone says that's not possible, remember back to when the updated terms of service were first posted on MD (and since revoked), which said that any content posted on MD becomes owned by NamiComi and could be sold for-profit by NamiComi at any time they decide to do so.
Okay, that would piss me and my group off, and would have to shut down our operation here.

Except mangas with no official translations. That's the category my group sticks it's nose in. Unless an overseas publisher wants to own the whole Katts Work catalog like Fakku did with Wanimanga, we'll just continue with what we're working on, and hope that if it happens, we get picked up to be the legit translators of their work.

Sadly lot of manga without official TL got hit anyway. It's still illegal in the first place.

I edited my previous comment because I went back and checked and some of those things are still present. The new terms specify that they don't claim ownership over contributions, but that posting here grants them an irrevocable license to resell it as they please.

See https://mangadex.org/compliance/terms, particularly paragraph 7. They also added the (Social Network) tag at the end of paragraph 7, but it's unclear what that means.

As far as I know the group can mass delete all chapters they provided and without proper monetary exchange it would make a case against the site itself to which it would at least make them take down all material that they have, but just to be sure I would start looking for other possible places to have your group work on.

Still by the terms it would not work for actual group translation.

"We do not assert any ownership over your Contributions. You retain full ownership of all of your Contributions and any intellectual property rights or other proprietary rights associated with your Contributions."

It's basically a way to justify the subscription/supporter monetization thing they got going own right now using the work of other people and just being a place where those works are, but the actual translation are still from the people that produced it. Also even if they made changes to the TOS anything publicized before the change would be exempt of that.

Honestly, when it came to 1LDK chapter 14 and 15, I swear Project-H almost 1:1 ripped off my group's translations, then gave up for some reason after releasing chapter 15. Probably found out that our group was still working on it, and is current. I always wondered what the reason was.

Why does this remind me of the BS crunchyroll and FAKKU pulled off before they went full corpo?
FAKKU at least kept all their lolisho content, all they did was remove the tag. Which does make it a pain in the ass to find but its still there. I'd know because I have straight up bought physical loli H-manga from them pretty recently.

Does anyone know if the delete ur account button became unavailable due to today's event, or has that been greyed out for a while now?

There are several jurisdictions that consider ficional depictions of underage characters in sexual acts to be illegal.
Again, this is a terrible argument because there are significantly more countries have homosexual content illegal. If you're doing this to comply with international laws, then I have to ask again, when are you going to remove all the yaoi and yuri manga?
