Jumping back here because my previous post had a sentence that was poorly worded and came off as too much of a personal attack or moral grandstanding. I also didn't provide enough context on the content being removed, so that's on me.

I've been reading some of the replies, and thank you for voicing your opinions and concerns, whether in this thread or elsewhere. Users want clarification on the removals, so please find it below.

We were made aware of content that goes against our content policy, specifically clause 3.1.1 regarding underage characters in pornographic settings. The content that was removed, and some content still being reviewed, includes entries labelled Mature, with characters that are engaging in sexual intercourse and either:

• They are clearly very young in appearance, and the content does not confirm that they are adults.
• The content itself confirms that they are under the age of 18.

Nothing else is being examined at this time. We're currently exploring options to retain the title entry and other non-infringing metadata, but for now, we need to proceed with the removal.

Twitter is a for-profit corporation. Mangadex is a non-profit project run by the scanlation community for the scanlation community, and being able to operate in any arbitrary jurisdiction shouldn't be a consideration. Even comparing the two is an insult to our intelligence. Unless all the reassurances from the mods that MD is still a community project and being operated by NamiComi won't change anything are BS.

Though seriously, if this is a decision from the new corporate overlords, just tell us that openly. You owe us that much considering MangaDex would be nothing without its user community, and the contributors need to know whether they can still post content here or if they need to be afraid of running afoul of unannounced rule changes.

This is not going to end well, I'm telling you, the event that's gonna unfold is people mass exodus from this site, along with subscription cancellations. Betray your fans, and the trust is lost forever.

I gotta say, I have been reading from several other sites for a long time since the few last mass purges that happened on this site, I still had some I would come back (without even login anymore, just plain search) because of the scan groups being better. If they move to other sites that keep gaining strength out there I would have no reason to come back and I think a lot of people will realize that with this shitshow that is happening right now.

Except mangas with no official translations. That's the category my group sticks it's nose in. Unless an overseas publisher wants to own the whole Katts Work catalog like Fakku did with Wanimanga, we'll just continue with what we're working on, and hope that if it happens, we get picked up to be the legit translators of their work.

I wouldn't even be mad about it if that was the case, I just wish they'd be open about it.

What I would be mad about is if they retroactively got licenses for scanlated manga, then made a profit by selling subscriptions to read fan-scanlated manga without paying anything back to the groups that did all the work.

And before anyone says that's not possible, remember back to when the updated terms of service were first posted on MD (and since revoked), which said that any content posted on MD becomes owned by NamiComi and could be sold for-profit by NamiComi at any time they decide to do so.

edit: actually, the terms still say effectively the same thing, just worded in a less explicit way. See https://mangadex.org/compliance/terms particularly paragraph 7. They aren't claiming ownership over content, but do still reserve the right to resell it as they wish.
