She reminded him of his overworked self. Additionally, the principal reminded him of his shitty bosses. Thus, when she betrayed him, he realised that she wasn't acting on her own will. Especially when she showed him the abuse that she suffered from.

He is supposed to be a "villian" but that really just meant to be the justification to do what he wants. Since he's naturally a good person, he wanted to help her without judging her.
