I don't think the denseness of a main character has irked me anywhere near as bad as the denseness of this one has. Fucking hell.
It's a miracle the floor under him is not collapsing.

It's been ages since the story went back to it, but the ML has a long history of watching every girl fall for his buddy and even use him to get to the other dude. The notion that there's anyone into him is, as a result, completely alien to him. The fact that circumstantial evidence early on points him to the conclusion that both of those two girls are also into the friend doesn't help matters at all.

Oh for sure, although there's some (reasonable) denseness there, I moreso mean the whole "They all look good on you" and "It looks really cute" bit.
He had the issue plainly and clearly presented and still couldn't use that knowledge to connect any dots to anything that happened during their trip, as though the concept of context doesn't exist for him

These girls are literally hanging out with just him and his friend and ignoring his frind and showing off their swimsuits to him. As a man with low self-esteem, I can firmly say this guy is a moron.
People keep complaining about the denseness of the ML, but what about the wingman/best friend?
They've known each other their whole lives, so he should know how his friend functions, he knows everything that's going on, and still doesn't talk about it with his best friend? AND he's even infatuated with Haruna!?
That's on a whole different level of idiocy.
Or maybe he's got his own kind of denseness, where he doesn't acknowledge his own attractiveness when it comes to the girls.

Exactly, or well, rather - even in ch. 12, when asked about his female childhood friend, he thinks about her via Fuyuka, indicating that he thought she basically showed up when she saw Fuyuka was around, i.e. NOT to hang specifically with the ML.
I think some here don't understand how pervasive and insidious mental conditioning can be.
So I'll use myself as an example: I was "in love" with this girl, and "together" with her in 7th, and part of 8th grade (whatever that means - we spoke a lot on the phone, but almost nothing in school, and it was never physical).
Then she broke up with me, and (and this is the thing!) told me that she still liked me, but we were too young, so we should see how things were in the future.
I was crushed, but ... "hopeful" (?).
So for something like 5 years, I simply put all those kinds of feelings ... let's call it "on hold". I didn't even notice if a girl showed interest in me. Sure, I could see that a girl was beautiful, sexy, cute, etc., but since none of them told me straight up that they were actively interested in me, none of those things mattered to me.
Then I was invited to a party celebrating the ending of high school organised by this girl and some of her closer friends.
I went to it. And she didn't even try to really talk to me. She did talk to this other guy I'd seen around her before, though. (Yeah, he clearly was into her, and had been for years.) At that point, I finally decided that "Nah, this has gone on for long enough."
And it was like a switch was thrown in me. I probably started behaving differently towards others, showing more interest towards girls (no, I did not turn into some manipulative Casanova. I've always been shy. But just being nicer, and showing interest in other people would make quite a change.). It actually took about 2 weeks until I got together with a very nice girl. Sure, it didn't last more than half a year, but apparently, I'd simply not allowed myself to see if any girls were into me at all.
So what I'm saying is - ML isn't necessarily dense, but his experiences may have led him to filter his surroundings in a bad way.
Also, there's different kinds of intelligence. I was quite capable in school, but not really good at social interaction.

Of course a person (not even specifically a girl) is going to like a direct compliment rather than a vague "uh, well, they all look good on you!"
Even if she wasn't interested in him, of course it would be annoying for him to compliment the other person properly while he doesn't do the same to her.
And he keeps saying "I just don't know why everyone keeps getting annoyed at me!"
There's a hundred reasons why that could be the case, just pick ONE of them.
It'd be far more interesting if he thought about it, assumed a false reason why he messed up, and tried to fix it. Rather than this where he's this completely passive guy that absently wanders from misunderstanding to misunderstanding
