Mark my words: this manga will run for at least another twenty years. It's a large scale social experiment simply to see how many vengeful spirit villains can be revealed to not be Mima before fans finally understand it simply isn't going to happen.

I dunno if this'll help, but the idea of "youkai are especially weak to vengeful spirit possession" has been in the lore since like 2012, from Symposium of Post-Mysticism. So it's at least consistent world building, not just an asspull for the sake of this manga. Although if you don't like the general idea even from 2012, that's valid.

ZUN, stop violating the basic rules of a mystery story. If you want to introduce some new spirits with some backstory that expands the lore, you're doing it wrong. The very FACT that you present this as a DETECTIVE STORY is detrimental to what you wanna do. You'd have a better chance at making it work if you'd instead present it as an occult supernatural story.
