Are... are we not supposed to side with the mother? Cause i'm really siding with the mother. It's really hard to believe "no, really, we wanted you to leave and not be subjected to it, trust us"...
"Trust me sis, I know this has been going on for like a gorillion generations but mom really was all about saving you fr fr"
Even if it turns out to be true, you really can't blame her for not believing them.

Sorry this took a while, I made an oopsie while copying files around and overwrote the Photoshop files for this chapter so I had to restart from scratch.
Oof, I feel ya brother, I remember doing stupid fuck ups like that myself ages ago XD

As for this chapter, damn it made me a bit teary eyed, protect Kaya-sama at all costs!!!

This is one of the reasons you never leave shit like this without saying a word!!! You gotta explain it to the person properly, in this case, your sister, "mom wants you out because she wants you to live a long life and no longer continue this family curse". It's that fucking simple, at least she wouldn't have left the family without deep resentment.

Considering that she actually found life and family outside of the Ebisumori clan and that the cursed womb practice was set to die after Yoshie's death? Yes, you're not supposed to side with the mother and her unabomber ways. You were supposed to be empathetic of her motivation though, as she was kept in the dark and lost a mother figure in the process.

It's not that simple. A rational discussion only works when both sides are rational. If one side is overwhelmed with emotion, then nothing said will get through. And FORCING someone to be rational only makes them more emotional. Given how upset the mom was, having lost the one person who cared about her to her cult's magical Sheer Heart Attack ghost she had to birth, no amount of reasoning is likely to get through.

It was three generations that practiced it. So Mutsu's grandma started it and she's the Fourth gen priestess according to Ch. 42 pg. 5. She used her own sister for the first death curse (Ch. 42 pg 9). Nana and Kaya's mom are the 7th generation which is the generation where it stopped.

There’s plenty of evidence that Mutsu was stopping it as laid out in this and previous chapters. Mainly that Kaya’s mom wasn’t brainwashed at a young age to want to go along with it. Really you don’t need any more evidence than that. They absolutely had the power to keep her captive and brainwashed and kept the practice going if they wanted to.

The weakest part of this (and a lot of stories have this issue) is that the whole conflict comes down to lack of communication and misunderstanding. It would’ve been a more interesting conflict if Kaya’s mom had been told this directly or indirectly and still decided to end the family regardless to prevent it from ever happening again. I’m fairly dissatisfied with how this arc and major plot line ended up turning out.

Now it just comes off as her being mad she got bullied in school and that they tried to hide the fact that their family was fucked up from her for her own sanity, which apparently they were right about doing so. If she had never found her aunts diary she wouldn’t have known about the cursed womb practice or how to do it. Her life still would have sucked through school and I imagine she would have eventually still ran way and gotten married and had a family. But instead of that she’s choosing do a murder-suicide using her own kids and husband.

Mutsu still carries a majority of the blame for how she treated Kaya’s mom and like I stated earlier this whole thing could have probably been avoided with even just one decent explanation from Mutsu to Kaya’s mom when she was younger. Maybe even stronger action such as hiding her from the clan at a young age or whenever it was she decided she wouldn’t do the cursed womb practice anymore. That kinda depends on how much power the rest of the clan had over them at the time though.

EDIT: Number of generations the practice was going on. Originally I thought it was 2. It was 3.

Yes, no, Mirai is right : SHUT THE FUCK UP, NANA !!!

You're not the one who had to deal with the years of neglect and bullying : just because it was meant to be "out of love", Mirai still suffered genuine hurt and trauma !! No matter how much you pretend you cared, you still got the easy part out of it !! Also, fuck that Old Hag too : she choses the easy way out in the end to let everybody else deal with the consequences of her actions. spits

Really hard to not root for Mirai getting her revenge... the only thing I can't get behind is Kaya getting pulled into this, honestly, otherwise, I would gladly procure her some fuel to make the clan burn faster !!

Still hate what Kaya's mom is doing but she's so fucking right. She went through isolation from her family and outside. She basically had no one until her husband. Nana and the others had each other.

She was basically all alone most of her life. Fuck that "we did it to protect you" bs. Grandma could have learnt to say sorry herself

It's this insane desire to pretend that the people who are abusing you actually love you, and are doing it for your own good.

(Same trope that we get in some of the "kicked from the party" stories.)

Grandma could have simply raised the girl with love; then when she was old enough explained things to her, and make it clear that she's working to end this sick family dynamic. But instead we get the "emotionally abused because I loved you" story.

Is that speculation or spoiler? Where's your evidence for "only 2 generations"?
Looking back I was off by one generation. The practice was started by the fourth generation priestess (according to ch 42 pg 5) and Kaya is currently the 8th (ch 30 pg 9) and Nana is the 7th. So the practice, at most, was done for the 4th, 5th, and 6th generations of family and stopped with the 7th. So 3 generations. Depending on how young the women were when they started having kids it could be anywhere from a ~40-100 year period the practice was happening.

Looking at the clothes of the person who made the request in Ch. 42 Pg. 7 is wearing a suit which from what I've been able to find on Google started being worn in the late 19th century and more commonly in the early 1900's.

How many lives were used during those generations to do the death curse we don't know. The whole thing gets a little confusing because the mother/priestess from the previous generation would have to give birth to more than two girls for more than 1 curse a generation.
