From what i remember, the origin of the MILF genre was around the concept of a teenage boy (and sometimes even younger) being sexually attracted to the mother of his friend (be male friend or female friend).

I think MILF (as a genre) started from Japanese Hentai, while the Western Media did start to use that wording eventually, but prior to the introduction of MILF genre in Western media, the primary concept was the Cougar genre. Which is why majority of people in the West relate MILF to older women only, when its technically isn't just limited to that.
